Wind Ensemble

The Indian River High School Wind Ensemble is the premier concert ensemble in the band program, designed for students who demonstrate advanced musicianship, strong technical ability, and a commitment to musical excellence. This ensemble performs high-quality wind band literature while continuing to develop tone, technique, ensemble awareness, musical expression, and leadership. Members of the Wind Ensemble are expected to maintain a high standard of preparation, rehearsal etiquette, and personal responsibility as they represent the Indian River Band Program through concerts, assessments, community performances, and other school events. Through this ensemble, students grow not only as musicians, but also as disciplined, collaborative, and expressive members of the band community.

  • Membership in the Indian River High School Wind Ensemble is by audition. Students are evaluated based on musicianship, tone quality, technique, sight-reading ability, preparation, and overall readiness for advanced ensemble literature. Auditions are typically held each year during the ensemble placement process, and students interested in Wind Ensemble should prepare the required materials and demonstrate a strong commitment to rehearsal, performance, and continued musical growth.

  • The Wind Ensemble performs a wide variety of advanced concert band literature, primarily ranging from VBODA Grade 4–6. Repertoire may include traditional wind band classics, contemporary works, lyrical pieces, marches, transcriptions, and music from a variety of cultures and styles. Students in this ensemble are challenged to perform music that develops technical skill, musical expression, ensemble awareness, and a deeper understanding of high-level wind band performance.

  • The Wind Ensemble typically performs 3–4 concerts each year. Students should also expect a few after-school rehearsals prior to each concert to help prepare the ensemble for a high-quality performance.
