Director of Bands

Mr. Luke Walker

Mr. Luke Walker joined Indian River High School as Director of Bands in 2026. He is a dedicated music educator, ensemble director, designer, and program builder committed to building a comprehensive, student-centered band program rooted in excellence, pride, and community. His teaching experience includes concert band, marching band, percussion, AP Music Theory, guitar, adaptive music, and orchestra/strings.

Prior to joining Indian River, Mr. Walker taught at Grassfield High School in Chesapeake Public Schools and First Colonial High School in Virginia Beach City Public Schools, where he helped lead successful concert, marching, and indoor percussion programs. His ensembles have earned consistent Superior ratings, Virginia Honor Band recognition, Bands of America Regional Finalist placements, Atlantic Indoor Association championships, and multiple Winter Guard International World Percussion Championships medalist performances. These experiences have shaped his belief that successful music programs are built through strong fundamentals, clear expectations, thoughtful planning, and a culture where every student feels valued and challenged.

Mr. Walker has extensive experience developing musicians across a wide range of ability levels, from beginning and intermediate students to advanced performers competing at the highest levels of scholastic music. In addition to his work with large ensembles, he has taught AP Music Theory for many years, helping students develop advanced skills in ear training, sight-singing, analysis, composition, and overall musicianship. He is also passionate about inclusive music education and believes that every student deserves access to meaningful musical experiences.

As an educator, Mr. Walker emphasizes preparation, accountability, artistry, leadership, and personal growth. His goal is for students to leave the band program not only as stronger musicians, but also as more confident, disciplined, and thoughtful people. He believes that band should be a place where students take pride in their work, support one another, and contribute to something larger than themselves.

Mr. Walker is honored to be part of the Indian River community and looks forward to continuing the program’s proud tradition while helping students create new moments of excellence, connection, and pride.
